What is up my friends? Hey, welcome to the very first episode of the Cleaner’s Blueprint Podcast. I’m your host Dusty Bell and this podcast is all about taking your carpet cleaning business to the next level. Now it doesn’t matter if you’re brand new, still looking for your first client or you’ve got some momentum and you’re trying to add that second van, or maybe you got 10 vans and you’re trying to get to 20.
Wherever you are, this podcast is still for you. And it also doesn’t really matter what you clean. You might clean carpets, you might clean windows, you might clean houses, but the fundamentals are still the same. And I promise you’re going to find a ton of value here as well. So with this quick intro episode, I just want to tell you a little bit about me and a why I started this podcast, tell you what this podcast is about and what you can expect from the show week after week.
So a little bit about me, I started my cleaning business when I was 22 years old. I had no money, I had no experience. And within four years I had grown my little one man cleaning company into a seven figure business with 30 employees. Before I dive a little deeper, I want to tell you a quick story.
So at the time of this recording, right now we’re just about a month away from Thanksgiving and every year I get asked to bring the same dish. It’s a…it’s now my famous sweet potato casserole. You know, this all started years back. I was asked to bring something to share and literally it was the morning of thanksgiving. And I was in sheer panic because I’m not a cook. I think, at the time, the most I’ve ever cooked was a bowl of cereal. I don’t even know if you can cook a bowl of cereal, but that’s all I knew how to make maybe some toast. But anyway, I pull myself together. I did a quick search on the Internet and I just searched for Thanksgiving side dishes. And the first thing that popped up was called “Yummy Sweet Potato Casserole”.
And it looked great cause it had over 1,005 star reviews, I think. Maybe five ingredients. And I think it took like 30 minutes to make. So it was perfect. I was able to run to Safeway real quick, grab what I needed. I followed the instructions there on the recipe step by step, told me everything I needed to do. I hope for the best. And you know what happened? It was a hit. I mean, everybody loved it. It was one of the most talked about dishes of the night and you would have thought that I had been cooking for years, but literally all I did was follow a simple set of instructions. And that’s really how I built my business as well. You know, at 22 years old I knew nothing about business. All I knew was that I had a goal and it was to build a million dollar cleaning company.
So I just needed to figure out how, and I just, I went to the Internet and I searched for people who have already done it and, and I went and got some mentors. I asked them how they did it and I just did what they said. You know, one of my favorite is Tony Robbins. Now, I’ve never met him in person, but he’s been a mentor to me through his books and audio programs for over 20 years. And I’ve been listening to his stuff. And one of the things he always says is success leaves clues. And that the fastest way to success in any area of your life is to find someone who’s doing or has done what you want to do. And then just do the same thing. You know, find out what strategies they used. Find out what steps they took. You know, people who are successful, yeah, they’ve got a strategy that already works.
And if you follow their strategy and you sow the same seed, you’ll reap the same rewards. Whatever struggle or challenge you’re facing in your business right now, somebody has already faced it and they’ve already solved it, whether it’s getting more business or hiring employees or creating systems, or fill in the blank. Thousands of people have already done it, and you’ve got an opportunity to learn from them, to learn their strategies and learn the steps that they took and apply them in your own business. And that’s really what this podcast is all about. You know, my goal with this podcast is to give you a behind the scenes look at exactly what it takes to build a successful cleaning business. Each week we’re going to be talking with world class authors, experts in various fields. We’re going to be talking with a lot of successful cleaning business owners and we’re basically just going to ask them to pull back the curtain a bit and, and share the strategies that they use to build their business.
And we’re going to give you some actionable advice so you can do the same in yours. And now when I say successful cleaning companies, I’m not just talking about the large multitrack operations either. You know, there’s a lot of our guests are going to just be owner operators. Maybe they just have a handful of employees or maybe they have no employees at all. Because the only person that can define success is you. And for you that may be a large $5 million business or for you, your goal might just be to make enough money to pay the bills and go fishing. I mean, who knows what it is. But, uh, we could find success at any level and we can all learn from people at every level as well. We are going to be talking a lot about success and about strategies that work that had been battle tested and and that you can implement right now today in your business.
But this isn’t just going to be a highlight reel. We’ve all had a lot of struggles and we’ve all had a lot of failures and we’re going to be talking about those as well. You know, I can remember a time in my business, I had nearly a hundred thousand dollars in receivables, I had about $30,000 in my business checking account and I still couldn’t make my own car payment. I’ve had plenty of employee issues. I’ve had clients sue me, I’ve had more than my fair share of sleepless nights as I’m sure you have as well. But I’ve also been able to enjoy all the other amazing benefits that come from business ownership. Sure, I’ve had some financial success, but most importantly I’ve had the time freedom to do what I want. So my wife and I, we have four boys, they’re 11 and under, and she’s been able to stay home with them from day one.
You know, I’ve made it to every game, every practice, every event. And I’m just fortunate enough that for the past 16 years I’ve had a business that’s allowed me to do that. It’s paid me well, but it’s also, allowed me to have the time to spend with my family and to do the things that are most important to me. So yeah, I’ve had a lot of success, but I’ve had a ton of failures as well. And bottom line is I wouldn’t be where I’m at today if I had to figure this all out on my own. You know, I’ve had dozens of mentors, I’ve read hundreds of books and I’ve listened to thousands of hours of audio, whether it’s a seminar or audio book or a podcast. You know, listening to programs like this has played such a huge role in my success. And I love audio like this because I could take it anywhere and I can take it wherever I wanted to go, I can listen to it at time.
And whether I was out in the field, whether it’s driving between jobs, out on a run, you know, I almost always have earbuds in my ear and that’s why I’m so excited to go on this journey with you because I’ve just always been fascinated with the stories of entrepreneurs, how they got started, kind of what they did to get to where they are today. And now I get to talk to these guys week after week and share their stories with you and I hope that you’ll find just one thing and each show one nugget, one idea that you can act on and implement in your business because we could learn and we can listen all we want, but nothing happens unless we take action.
Well that’s it for today, my friends, but please stay tuned because we’ve got some amazing shows lined up for you over the next couple of weeks. We’re going to be joined by John Braun, Howard Partridge and Ryan Kettering, just to name a few.
